Sarahs’ Garden

Sarahs’ Garden — an RCA Treasure

Respite Care Atlanta (RCA) provides spiritually integrated activities for adults with cognitive challenges and welcomed respite and support for their caregivers. “Sarahs’ Garden” and its related gardening activities enhance the mission of Respite Care Atlanta by providing a peaceful, relaxing, and safe outdoor space for program members.

Planned activities emphasize indoor crafts projects and outdoor interactions in the garden, offering sensory engagement and well-being through social horticulture. A Grow Light system allows us to propagate plants indoors all year long to plant in the garden and use in fine-motor skill activities with participants.

The Garden is named in honor of Sarah Kenan Kennedy and in memory of Sarah Yuille Clarke, who together created the Atlanta Alzheimer’s Auxiliary in 1998 in support of research and awareness related to the disease. Located just outside the RCA program area, the Garden honors them and their legacy.

Designed by Edward L. Daugherty, ASLA, the garden hardscaping and tree and shrub planting began in late 2019. By summer 2020, the garden was blooming with colorful flowers, fragrant herbs, ripe cherry tomatoes, and a variety of perennials, many shared and planted by volunteers from their own gardens. Level walkways provide a safe footing for program members using assistive walking devices. Sturdy seating at each end of the garden invites both members and volunteers to sit under an arbor and enjoy the verdant respite.

We look forward to sharing the beauty of Sarahs’ Garden with the RCA family and visitors!
